The
Pilates Studio Calgary
What
is Pilates?
Pilates
(pi-lah-tees) is a form of body conditioning and rehabilitation
which was developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates.
Pilates
History
Born in Germany, Joseph Pilates immigrated to Great Britain
in 1912, where he became a prize fighter, an expert skier and
diver, and later taught self-defence to Scotland Yard detectives.
Shortly after immigrating to America in 1923 he opened his first
"Pilates Studio" in New York City. Joseph's new exercise
regime was an instant hit with professional dancers like Martha
Graham and George Balanchine. These dancers found out what millions
would in the decades to follow: The Pilates method was the best
way to recover from injuries and to also prevent their recurrence.
"A few well-designed movements, properly performed in
a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics
or forced contortions." -Joseph Pilates (1881 - 1967)

Using
mat work and specially designed equipment, Pilates works to
re balance the muscular system by strengthening the deep abdominal
and back muscles which support the body.
It
improves flexibility, muscular strength, poor posture, coordination
and control, while also releasing stress and tension through
the integration of breath.
It
is appropriate for all ages, all body types, and all levels
of fitness.

Testimonials in the Media
"As
close as you can get to a perfect workout." -Elle Magazine
"No
pain, plenty of gain - the point is not to exercise hard, but
to exercise well. Instead of doing 5 to 100 repetitions you
might only do five - but with precision, controlled breathing,
total focus, economy of movement." -Albuquerque Journal
